Perform a speedtest on Synology NAS
This guide explains how to do a speed/iperf test in CLI between your computer and your Synology NAS. Speed tests can be helpful in determining the download and upload speed of the Internet connection to the Synology NAS.
Configure the speedtest
1. Install SynoCli Monitor Tools Package
- on the DSM interface, go to the package manager
- click on the Settings button in the taskbar then Package Source tab
- click on the Add button
- enter in Name : SynoCommunity
- enter in Location : https://packages.synocommunity.com/
- validate the two windows via the OK button
- then go to the Community tab in the left menu which has been added
- then install the package: SynoCli Monitor Tools
‌2. Open SSH connection
- on the DSM interface, go to control panel
- click on the Terminal & SNMP tab in the left menu
- in the right part of the screen, activate the “Enable SSH service” box
- validate by clicking on the apply button
- if you do not need the SSH connection, you can deactivate this same box at the end of this test
3. Launch iperf server
- on your computer, open the console ( Terminal on macOS, Shell on Linux, PowerShell/Command on Windows)
- run the command: ssh user_name_dsm@ip_syno
- enter your user's password and validate with Enter
- once connected via SSH, run the command iperf3 -s
4. Launching the test
- on your computer, download the iperf3 client from the official website
- launch a new console
- go to the folder where you downloaded the iperf3 executable
- enter the command iperf3 -c ip_syno
- the test results are displayed after a few seconds, it is possible to discover the bandwidth in sending and receiving, between your Synology and your computer
