Install Django
Update 10/01/2026
This guide concerns Django, an open-source web development framework in Python.
Prerequisites
- A Cloud VPS or VPS Lite (shared hosting and Managed Cloud Server are not supported).
- Python 3 and the
pippackage manager installed on the server, and full SSH access. - Master the command line interface (CLI Linux) and the management of Python virtual environments (e.g.
venv).
Installation and initialization
Here are the general steps to set up your environment on your server:
- Connect to your VPS via SSH.
- Create and activate a virtual environment to isolate your project's dependencies:
python3 -m venv my_environment && source my_environment/bin/activate - Install the framework:
pip install django - Initialize your project:
django-admin startproject name_of_project
Deployment
The built-in development server (runserver) is not designed for a production environment. To securely expose your application on the Internet, configure an application server (e.g., Gunicorn or uWSGI) behind a reverse proxy such as Nginx or Apache.
