Replace a subdomain with a domain
This guide explains how to replace the address of a website that is currently a Web hosting subdomain (e.g., https://dev.domain.xyz) with the main domain (https://domain.xyz).
The 4 steps in brief
- We start with a site created and accessible through the main domain URL dev.domain.xyz
- We add an alias for it domain.xyz
- We swap the two types (the main domain becomes an alias, and the alias becomes the main)
- We remove the old name dev.domain.xyz
The steps in detail
To switch from a site with a subdomain address like "dev.domain.xyz" to a direct address like "domain.xyz":
- Log in to the Infomaniak Manager (manager.infomaniak.com) using a web browser like Brave or Firefox
- Click on the icon in the top right corner of the interface (or navigate through the left sidebar menu, for example)
- Select Website (in the Web & Domain universe)
- Click directly on the name of the object in the table that appears
- Click the blue Add button (in the Domains section)
- Add the desired new name on the first line, check the corresponding boxes, specify the main domain to set, and validate
- Unlink the subdomain via the action menu â‹® to its right in the Domains block:
Note that the site's location remains in the original folder on the server — the name of this location can be in the form /sites/dev.domain.xyz, for example, but this has no impact on the live site.
