Understanding the Difference Between Hosting and a Website
Update 08/11/2026
This guide explains how multi-site web hosting works, both from a technical and administrative perspective.
Technical operation
A web hosting plan can group several websites:
- In this case, the resources of this hosting plan (disk space, databases, memory, etc.) are shared among all the sites it contains.
With a Cloud Server, you have a larger infrastructure:
- For example, a standard plan may include 5 hosting plans and allow you to create up to 20 websites. You are free to distribute these 20 websites across your 5 hosting plans as needed.
Access management
In the Infomaniak Manager, access rights apply to the hosting plan as a whole:
- It is not possible to limit a user's access to a single website: if they are invited to a hosting plan, they will have access to all the sites it contains.
However, to restrict access to a single site, you can use these alternatives:
- On the server: create an FTP user and limit their access to only the specific website folder.
- On the website itself: manage rights and access directly from your website creation system (for example, with WordPress role management).
