Transfer a WordPress site (with Duplicator)
This guide explains how to transfer a website that has WordPress installed using one of its extensions, Duplicator.
Prerequisites
- order a Web hosting / Cloud Server if you don't have one yet
- create a site on your new hosting without installing WordPress Infomaniak
Complete backup of the WordPress site
To back up all files and the database of a WordPress site:
- From the WordPress admin console, install and activate the Duplicator extension
- From the WordPress main menu, open the extension dashboard
- Follow the wizard to create a new backup package
- Download the installer (installer.php typically) and the archive (.zip typically) to your computer at the end of the process
Preparing to restore the site
On your Web hosting:
- create an FTP account
- create a MySQL database
- upload the installer and archive created in step 1 to your hosting via FTP
It is advisable to note the following information:
- FTP host server
- FTP account name
- FTP account password
- Database host server
- Database name
- Database user password
Restoring the WordPress site
To restore the WordPress site on the domain name of your choice:
- Go to the URL of the installer (e.g., www.domain.xyz/installer.php)
- Check the Connect and Remove All Data box and enter the requested information regarding the database
- During step 2 (Update) of the restoration process, it is possible to indicate the new domain name of the WordPress site under New settings
- At the end of the restoration, test the site and delete the archive and installer from the Duplicator extension
The WordPress thus "restored" will not be visible in the WordPress & Apps Infomaniak section because it is not installed from scratch as would be a new installation.
