Error: operation denied when attempting to add an MX record with an IP address
If there is no fully qualified domain name that resolves to the required IP address, follow the procedure set out below.
Actions to be carried out
Log into your control panel.
Go to DNS -> External subdomains
Create an external subdomain, specifying the required hostname, ensuring that the latter does not conflict with any of the names already present in the DNS zone for your account (if it does, you must specify a temporary hostname while the MXs are released on our system), along with the IP address.
Note that if a timeout occurs while pinging subdomain.domain.xyz and that opening a socket on port 25 is also not possible, the machine will therefore not appear reachable and not ready to send e-mails.
Consequently, the attempt to add the machine is denied and you get an error message saying "invalid field". You must check these conditions on your machine: in order to edit/add an MX record to the domain, it must be possible to connect to the machine in question via SMTP!
In short, in order for an MX entry to be valid, it must:
- not be a internal subdomain on your account
- not be mail/ns1/ns2/mta-gw.infomaniak.ch...
- be a fully qualified domain name
- reply on port 25
