View and forward email headers
This guide explains how to display and transmit the headers of an e-mail.
What are email headers?
An e-mail is composed of a header (header) and the actual content of the message (body, body of the text). The headers of an e-mail provide different information such as:
- the sender
- the receiver
- the date
- the object
- the servers involved in the transmission between sender and receiver
Most messaging software does not directly show the headers, but displaying or transmitting them then allows Infomaniak support to identify the problems encountered.
Show headers
To display headers with Mail (mail.infomaniak.com):
- click on the action menu â‹® at the top right of the email concerned
- click on Show headers
To display the headers if you use an external mail application, read this guide (click here).
Send email headers
To send the headers of an e-mail, in response to a support request or to the recipient of your choice, either:
- copy/paste the headers displayed using the method above
- forward the email message
However, for the headers to be present, it is essential to transfer the message not in the body of the message but as an attachment only. The email attachment will normally be in .eml format and this file contains all the necessary headers.
